Energising Superfoods You Need To Try In Your Smoothies

We may be biased but we think that a superfood smoothie for breakfast is the best way to hydrate your body, kickstart your metabolism, and give you the energy you need to nail the day. Superfoods can be a valuable addition to diets which aren’t gaining essential nutrients from other sources, and can easily be added to smoothies to create well balanced and energising breakfasts.

Anyone who’s tried Craft Smoothie will agree that superfoods are a game-changer in smoothies. Not only do they deliver high concentrations of vitamins and minerals, superfoods bring a whole new dimension of flavour to your smoothies. Every Craft Smoothie box includes pre-portioned blends of organic superfoods matched with fresh seasonal ingredients, so you have everything you need to craft our healthy smoothie recipes, delivered to your door. See how it works in this short video.

Craft Smoothie How It Works

Here are three of my favourite energising superfoods that you need to try in your smoothies, and a smoothie recipe to combine all three of them!

Acai

Pronounced “ah-sigh-EE”, this superfood is harvested from the Amazon rainforest and has one of the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) ratings and may help prevent free radical damage and reduce the signs of ageing. Acai also contains amino acids which help support energy production, endurance and strength, and it’s naturally high in essential fatty acids which can support a healthy heart.

How to use acai in smoothies:

For an antioxidant-dense and energising blend, include acai in your next berry and banana smoothie with an added source of protein and healthy fats, like cashews or chia seeds.

Cacao

Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can get your hands on and it’s packed with the antioxidants which are lost in the processing of cocoa. Raw cacao is also the richest plant-based source of iron and is a good source of magnesium which is beneficial for a healthy heart and brain. Cacao can be added to smoothies as a powder, or in the form of cacao nibs which also make the perfect topping for smoothie bowls.

How to use cacao in smoothies:

As a plant-based source of iron, cacao contains non-heme iron which needs to be combined with vitamin C for optimal absorption. So remember to combine cacao in your smoothies with superfoods like goji berries and acai, or fruits like oranges and berries, to help your body absorb the iron from your smoothie.

Maca

Also hailing from South America, maca is an energising superfood which supports hormone balance in both men and women and can enhance mental clarity as well as sex drive. Complete with essential amino acids, phytonutrients, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, maca is a well-rounded superfood that even contains a higher concentration of calcium than milk.

Maca powder blends brilliantly in smoothies with cacao or acai, or both! Just add a teaspoon of maca to your breakfast smoothie for an energising superfood booster that tastes awesome too.
